where to move for cheap VPS?

Hello,

a few days ago I got a nice little mail from ionos where I run some VPSs that due to WebPros International GmbH massively hiking their prices they have no other option but to transfer down these price hikes.

Since that would mean a 5-fold price increase for my contracts, I am looking for other hosting providers. The service I need the most is just some super small VPS with a static IP to tunnel all my dynDNS-traffic through so that I can have a static IP linked to my domain and the sorts. Currently I am paying 1EUR per month.

I know that my question probably super basic and that I could just move to any other provider. I just wanted to ask if any of you could (dis-)recommend any providers due to positive or negative experiences?

many thanks in advace and have a pleasant thursday!

I use OVH for both VPS and a dedicated host, service is rock solid.

Nephalis@discuss.tchncs.de on 25 Sep 06:57 next collapse

Well, I got that mail too and I also use a 1€ server of ionos, but the mail only mentioned the price of plesk.

When I looked at the service page plesk wasn’t lizensed. So, are your sure you lizensed plesk? Because my usecase is fairly similar to yours…

Or did I got something wrong?

doeknius_gloek@discuss.tchncs.de on 25 Sep 11:09 collapse

No, I also got the mail and it stated pretty clearly that they only increase the price of the previously free plesk license to 5€. If you don’t use plesk (aka don’t have a license as you described), the VPS will still cost 1€/mon.

Look on lowendspirit.com. If you can live with ipv6-only you can get a little bit cheaper.

RheumatoidArthritis@mander.xyz on 25 Sep 21:12 collapse

Can you find an ipv6-mostly provider these days (access from outside wuth ipv6 but there’s some 6 to 4 translation layer so you can download from ipv4 only websites like github)?

solrize@lemmy.ml on 26 Sep 01:18 collapse

Github is v4 only? Yes that exists, look on lowendspirit for offers or post a request saying what you want.

Here’s an up to date answer (yes, it still is):

I really like Orange Host. Good service and reliable and based in Iceland. www.orangehost.com/web-hosting

I have smallest, $1/mo + VAT Racknerd VPS for exactly this purpose. Even latency from Europe is not so bad at ~130 ms. Didn’t find anything comperable in price in EU. lowendbox.com/…/new-vps-specials-by-racknerd-kvm-…

LEB ftw. Seriously almost all the vps deals I’ve gotten over the years has been through LEB.

Brunette6256@sh.itjust.works on 29 Sep 02:25 collapse

+1 LEB

I am very happy with Netcup. www.netcup.com/en/server/vps

schmurian@lsmu.schmurian.xyz on 26 Sep 00:56 collapse

I switched from Hetzner to Netcup after Hetzner increased their pricing. For my needs it works.

Marthirial@lemmy.world on 26 Sep 05:54 collapse

US servers seem sold out. Do you guys know if this is common?

schmurian@lsmu.schmurian.xyz on 26 Sep 06:56 collapse

Ah, sorry to hear. I don’t know. I got mine on a Black Friday deal.

dendarion@feddit.nl on 25 Sep 10:27 next collapse

You can use Oracle: even with a ‘pay as you go’ account (just add a valid credit card), you can have your VPS for free if you stay within the free tier-limits (4 cores - 24 GB RAM - 200 GB disk). I have been using mine this way for 2 years or so. (see also this guide)

fluckx@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 10:37 next collapse

Hetzner has been solid for me ( and eu based if that is relevant for you ).

IsoKiero@sopuli.xyz on 25 Sep 12:34 next collapse

Another happy Hetzner customer here. ~10 years so far, both for business and for personal use. 1€/month won’t happen, but they’re not that expensive either.

philpo@feddit.org on 25 Sep 15:28 next collapse

Another happy Hetzner customer here. They are more than solid.

The only issues I had was with the abysmal performance of the storagebox, but that got better recently.

Layer 7 is also an idea for those seeking storage, but won’t really help OPs case.

ijhoo@lemmy.ml on 25 Sep 23:34 next collapse

Another happy hetzner customer

rmuk@feddit.uk on 26 Sep 00:51 collapse

Yeah, me too. Two VPSs (one Helsinki, the other Nuremberg) each with a couple of IPs. Been running perfectly for years aside from when I fuck them up.

EpicFailGuy@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 11:00 next collapse

This is bad news … I also host my Pangolin ingress node on Ionos … Can you let me know what you pick?

BennyInc@feddit.org on 25 Sep 11:03 next collapse

I’m quite happy with ProHosting24 for a while now.

kalpol@lemmy.ca on 25 Sep 12:42 next collapse

Vultr has been pretty good.

DrunkAnRoot@sh.itjust.works on 25 Sep 19:18 collapse

vultr is kinda pricey tho

kalpol@lemmy.ca on 25 Sep 19:36 collapse

Is it? I just had a basic $5 a month machine so didn’t look too hard at it.

DrunkAnRoot@sh.itjust.works on 25 Sep 20:58 collapse

it depends they have some nice cheap vps options but it starts getting overpriced if you go to the ones needed to run heavier services

rozodru@piefed.social on 25 Sep 13:25 next collapse

I have OVH for dedicated but I’ve also used their VPS and they’re great. They leave me alone, don’t hound me for anything, cheap prices, reliable as I’ve never had issues them. can’t complain. They’re Euro based but they have servers near me in Montreal so I use that which is great when I put my VPN on there cause now I get student discounts everywhere since my server is at McGill University.

cantankerous_cashew@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 23:07 next collapse

Had to scroll too far down to find this. OVH is great, VPSes are cheap & reliable. Oh, and bandwidth is unlimited… arrr 🏴‍☠️

morrowind@lemmy.ml on 27 Sep 14:19 collapse

I tried OVH, prices seemed great… up until they asked me to verify my info with a picture of a government issued ID.

What the fuck.

rozodru@piefed.social on 27 Sep 14:26 collapse

really? I never had to do that. They’ve left me alone since I originally signed up with them.

morrowind@lemmy.ml on 27 Sep 14:29 collapse

Maybe based on location? idk. It said from the start “after we verify your info”, I didn’t realize they literally wanted pics. I kinda stopped after that, but there seems to be no way to cancel the order, so I’m just letting it sit until it expires.

rozodru@piefed.social on 27 Sep 14:31 collapse

I know when I tried to sign up with Herztwhatever, the other popular European one, they wanted my ID and I said no way. but yeah OVH has never once asked for mine.

poVoq@slrpnk.net on 25 Sep 13:56 next collapse

The price hike is only if you use Plesk. You can continue using the Ionos VPS for 1€/month as before. I doubt you were using Plesk before as it is an optional feature that is pretty useless.

If you generated a Plesk license key before, just delete it in your VPS server settings.

In my case I got the same email even though I never generated a Plesk license key, so I didn’t need to do anything.

vildis@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 25 Sep 22:36 next collapse

the lowendtalk forums are a goldmine for cheap VPS’

you can usually get a 1core, 1 gig ram, 10g storage vps for $7-12/year

0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 26 Sep 00:47 collapse

It can sometimes be a good mine, other times you end up with oversold servers that fail to run, constantly crash or is slow as fuck.

You really need to know what kind of server resource limits you’re actually assigned that’s not up for sharing.

wintervoid@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 26 Sep 08:09 next collapse

Personally I just skip the vps. I use my old HP laptop running fedora as my server (with cloudflared to expose my jellyfin and nextcloud because I live in a dorm and can’t port forward)
